Well, this winter’s weather has been crazy! One day it’s sunny and warm and the next it’s cold and snowing. We hear from a lot of people that the change in barometer can cause some serious migraines for those that suffer from them. The drop and rise of pressure tends to bring on these debilitating headaches. We’ve done some research and hope that our Migraine Tincture could help ease some of the pain.
Not only does the barometric pressure prompt migraines, alcohol, food additives and high stress levels are also triggers for migraine headaches. None of those things sound great to me (except maybe a glass of wine) but many migraine sufferers are never diagnosed. Migraine is a diagnosis of exclusion – it’s diagnosed by a process of elimination because there’s not yet a test or biomarker to show it’s present.
The most common symptom of a migraine is seeing auras. Auras are symptoms of the nervous system. They are usually visual disturbances, such as flashes of light or wavy, zigzag vision. Sometimes auras can also be touching sensations (sensory), movement (motor) or speech (verbal) disturbances. Your muscles may get weak, or you may feel as though someone is touching you. Other symptoms are vomiting, blurred vision, lightheadedness, and numbness in the extremities or face.
As herbalists in Northern New Jersey, we find that these plants have been a great help to those who suffer with migraines:
- Feverfew
- Lemon Balm
- Peppermint
- Hops
- Valerian
We created an herbal tincture with homegrown feverfew and lemon balm. Each of these herbs has a long tradition of use as a headache remedy. Feverfew has the most basis in research, particularly in preventing migraine headaches and reducing their severity, but it has also been used traditionally to reduce symptoms at onset. Lemon Balm is used to calm or sedate the nervous system therefore it will help to relax the tension in your head. Lemon Balm can also help with sleeping, and we all know that is one of the best things for us while we are not feeling well.
Tinctures are used orally, 20-30 min. from oneset of headache, and can be used every 30 minutes thereafter.
Our Mayernik Garden Migraine Tincture is now available in our market!
