What is the sinus?
Sinuses are the air-filled cavities or sacs that reside behind our cheekbones and forehead. They are connected to the nose via certain channels through which the mucus produced in the sacs is drained in the nose. The accurate function of the sinuses is still unknown to the experts, but some theories claim it helps in humidifying the air we breathe in and enhancing our voice. Certain viral, bacterial, and fungal infections inflame the sinus lining, blocking the channels for drainage and leading to acute or chronic sinusitis.
