What is analgesic?
Analgesic is an herbal action that induces analgesia i.e. a state of inability to sense pain without loss of consciousness. This action greatly assists in the management and treatment of pain associated with any potential or confirmed tissue damage.
Analgesics are broadly divided into:
- Nonopioid analgesics
- Opioid analgesics
Nonopioid analgesics include all the semisynthetic and synthetic pain-relieving agents, such as paracetamol (acetaminophen), NSAIDs, antidepressants, anti-epileptic medications, and local anesthetics.
On the other hand, Opioid analgesic agents are natural plant alkaloids derived from the resin of opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). They serve as the most effective analgesics to treat moderate to severe pain. Although their indication is established for acute and chronic pain management, their usage has always been deemed controversial due to tolerance, addiction, and side effects.
