What are Immunomodulators?
Immunomodulators are substances that alter the immune system's response, either by increasing (immunostimulation) or decreasing (immunosuppression) its sensitivity. They act at different levels of the immune system where they selectively block or magnify the quantity and action of immune responsive cells, such as lymphocytes, neutrophils, macrophages, natural killer cells, and T-lymphocytes.
The concept of immunomodulation was first coined in 1796 when Edward Jenner conducted the vaccination to oppose smallpox. They impart either specific or non-specific action.
