I {LOVE} to bake.
I {LOVE} sweets.
I am the only one in the house who enjoys sweets though so it’s sometimes hard to bake often. But I had some friends coming over to plan our trip to Greece so I thought this was the perfect dessert to serve.
Lilacs were in full bloom just a few weeks ago and I always try to use/preserve the bounty we have growing in our garden. I have never made Lilac Sugar before so I thought, well this is perfect timing. The recipe was a prompt from a wonderful food photography group I am in I was so excited to partake in this recipe challenge.
The recipe was created by ful-filled and as I continued to read her blog, I found out that she is now living in Greece so it was honestly the best dessert to serve for our Greek trip meeting. We also love to try Greek wines when we meet so we get a taste for what we will be enjoying for a week in September!
Ok so back to the recipe. This was the first successful biscuit I have made. I tried making them one Thanksgiving and they were literally hockey pucks. After that fail, I never really tried again. I didn’t have a biscuit cutter so I used a glass I had which worked perfectly. Always work with what you have! The biscuits were flakey with just the right amount of crunch. The strawberries (not in season unfortunately) macerated overnight so they became very sweet from the lilac sugar I used. And the lilac infused whipped cream – I was eating it by the spoonful!
I love how the seasonal flower was used throughout the whole recipe. I am always looking to use local, seasonal items when baking or cooking. We are just a few short weeks out from fresh, local strawberries soo I may have to make this again with another type of sugar since the lilacs are now all gone.
