What is a Emmenagogues?
Emmenagogues are herbs that are capable of inducing a menstrual flow, even when it is not due. They work by stimulating the blood flow to the pelvic region and uterus. They are recommended to be used in cases of delayed menstrual bleeding, other than pregnancy.
Formerly, emmenagogic herbs were employed to terminate unwanted pregnancies due to their abortifacient effect. Since medieval times, they have been informally described as ‘herbs for delayed menses’ and a euphemism for inducing abortions. There have been many disagreements where there are certain emmenagogic herbs used during pregnancy to prevent miscarriage, such as Ashwagandha.
